Abstract

Fan-made subtitles, or fansub, are a widely used form of audiovisual translation that helps viewers understand foreign-language entertainment content, including the South Korean variety show Going SEVENTEEN. Unlike official subtitles, fansubs are typically translated independently without professional editing, so their translation quality warrants examination. This study aims to describe the quality of the Indonesian translation in the fansub of Going SEVENTEEN episode “Debate Night II” in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data consisting of 26 data containing 98 argumentative utterance fragments from the Indonesian subtitles on the YouTube channel @Perfervid. Data were collected through documentation and questionnaire techniques, then analyzed using the translation quality assessment instrument developed by Nababan. The findings show that, in terms of accuracy, the translation was categorized as less accurate (5 accurate data and 21 less accurate data); in terms of acceptability, all 26 data were categorized as less acceptable; and in terms of readability, the translation was categorized as moderate (9 highly readable and 17 moderately readable data). Factors affecting translation quality included meaning shifts, addition and omission of information, the use of informal language, non-standard forms, code-mixing, inconsistencies in spelling and punctuation, and the use of foreign terms and cultural references. Based on these findings, the translation quality of the Going SEVENTEEN “Debate Night II” fansub still needs improvement, particularly in terms of accuracy and acceptability.
